Lakefield Standard
(reprinted from Lakefield Standard, Thursday October 17, 1935)
MRS. HENRY WENDEL, 71, PASSED AWAY MONDAY
Resident of Jackson County and Lakefield Community Since 1886
GOLDEN WEDDING WAS CELEBRATED IN 1932
Funeral Services Held Yesterday Afternoon at Immanuel Church
Mrs. Henry Wendel passed away at her home in this city early Monday morning
at 20 minutes past two o'clock, following an illniess of several months of
cancer of the liver. When attending physicians diagnosed her ailment and
informed her that there was little hope of regaining her health, she accepted
the verdict without fear and calmly awaited the will of her God whom she
trusted.
Catharina Amalia Wendel, nee Witt, was born June 2, 1861, on the island of
Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Here she was baptized in infancy, attended
Christian Day school and was confirmed by Pastor Dechnichs in the spring of
1876.
She came to America in 1880 and located at Davenport, Iowa, in which city she
met and married Henry Wendel in 1882. Four years later, in 1886, the couple
moved to a farm in Hunter township, Jackson county, Minnesota, later moving onto
a farm in Sioux Valley township. They resided there until 1910 when they retired
from active farm work and bought a home in Lakefield where they have since
resided continuously. As a climax to their long and happy married life they
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in this city in 1932.
In April of this year she began to fail in health and the physician summoned
diagnosed her malady as cancer of the liver, which brought her the realization
that she could not regain her health. Patiently she awaited the end, but pleaded
that her life might be spared to permit her to see once more her son Herman and
loved ones in Canada. This wish was granted and from Innisfree, Canada, nearly
1400 miles north, came Herman and family, to be with her in the last few days of
her life. All things being ready, her faith in the saving power of Jesus firmly
established, the Lord called the spirit from the frail body to its eternal home.
She was 71 years, four months and 12 days old.
Three children came to bless this kindly mother, one of whom, Henry,
preceeded her to the Great Beyond in 1919. She is deeply mourned by her
sorrowing husband, two sons, Chas. F. of Lakefield and Herman N. of Alberta,
Canada, daugher-in-law, Mrs. John Micklos, eight grandchildren, two great
grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon. A short service was held at
the home at 1 o'clock followed with a public service at Immanuel Lutheran
church, Rev A. Paul in charge. W.P. Schulz directed the rites. A male quartet
sang a special number. Pall bearers were Henry Lock, James Rost, William Hecht,
George Klinker, August Schultz and August Richter. Burial was in Immanuel
Lutheran cemetary in west Lakefield.
