Agnes (Grell) Volkmann

Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob Volkmann were held Thursday at the United Church
of Christ (E&R). Rev. Walter Baumgartner officiating. Burial was made in the
Morgan Cemetery. The pallbearers were Clarence Wiese, Clarence Reincke,
Palmer Volkmann, Edward Grell, John Grell and Ernie Grell.
Mrs. Agnes Volkmann, nee Grell, daughter of Friedrich Grell and Katharina Studet,
was born December 6, 1895, on the Island of Fehmarn, Germany. At the age
of 2 ˝ years, she came to America with her mother, one sister and two brothers.
They resided in Denison, Iowa for several years. Later they moved to
Schleswig, Iowa. At the age of 14 she was confirmed at the evangelical and
Reformed Church and became a member of the same. For several years she
worked in different home in the neighborhood of Schleswig. On the 25th day
of August 1915, she was married to Jacob Volkmann. To this union two
daughters were born. Mr. and Mrs. Volkmann lived on the farm until 1925.
From then on they made their home in the town of Schleswig. Mrs. Volkmann
was a member of the German Choir for 29 years and an active member of the
Women’s Guild for many years.
On June 22, she suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Crawford County
Memorial Hospital. She passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday morning, June 28,
1960, at 5:00 A.M. at the age of 64 years, 6 months, and 22 days.
She leaves to mourn her husband Jacob, two daughters, Velma, Mrs. Walter
Bliesmann of Schleswig, Luella at home, two grandchildren, “Wayne and Mary
Bliesmann, one brother Carl of Ricketts, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. Emma Rabe of
Schleswig and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in
death by her parents, seven brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Elizabeth Volpp Summoned By Death
Her Passing Casts Pall of Gloom Over Entire Coummunity. Illness Began Less Than
Two Weeks Ago.
WAS A CHRISTIAN CHARACTER
Death, coming unexpectedly as it were, to Mrs. Elizabeth Volpp, respected
citizen of Bloomfield, on last Thursday, plunged the community into deep
sorrow. No one was aware of the illness of Mrs. Volpp, her fatal illness
begining less than two weeks ago. Her illness commenced with an attack of the
mumps, an infection of the parotid glands and which assumed such great
proportions that all medical skill and friendly assistance were to no avail.
She passed away on Thursday , June 14th at 9:15 A.M.
Elizabeth Sophia Volpp, nee Steffen, was born on the Island of Fehmarn,
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on October 4 1875. At the age of five she came with
her parents here to this country, where they settled first in Crawford County,
IA. the vicinity of Pierce, Nebraska, was their next home, from where a few year
later they moved here to Knox county.
On September 24, 1896, she was united in marriage with Henry Volpp, who
preceded her in death six years ago. together with her husband thruout the
interest of St. Mark's congregation they both worked in its interest. They both
were among the charter members. The departed was among the first who organized
our Ladies Aid Society and to the very last was a most dependable member of the
same. She was also a charter member of the Royal Neighbors mutual aid
organization.
Her fatal illness began less than two weeks ago. an infection of the
parotid glands assumed such proportions that medical help could not stop its
sapping of her life. she passed away Thursday morning, June 14, at 9 15
o'clock, at the age of 58 years 8 months and 10 days.
Her death is mourned by her children: Herman, of Council Bluffs, IA,;
Minnie, of Pendleton, Oregon; Louis of Scribner, Nebr.; Mabel, Paul, Gertrude
and Gerald, of Bloomfield.
Besides these children she leaves to mourn her loss two brother and one
sister: Henry Steffen, Frazee, Minn.; Will Steffen, Bloomfield, and Mrs. Anna
Schumann, Russell, Iowa. there are also four grandchildren.
The Monitor joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

MRS. A VOSS OF NEAR STOCKTON CALLED TO REST
Mrs. Amalia Voss died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Lafrenz, two miles
southeast of Stockton, Monday noon at 1:45 o'clock.
Deceased was born in Tolendorf,Fehmarn,Germany,Dec.1,1841 and was married to
William Voss there, who preceded her in death 40 years ago.
On May 24,1911, she came to Scott county. She is survived by the following children: Johannes Voss of Blue
Grass, Nick Voss
of Omaha, Mrs. Kate Westphal of Davenport, Mrs. Dora Lafrenz of Stockton, Mrs.
Henrietta Erickson of Wheatland, Mrs. Bertha Lafrenz of Sherman, S.D. Also surviving are 44
grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren, and two sisters
in Germany, Mrs. John Weiland, and Mrs. Dora Gabel
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the home of
her daughter Mrs. Dora Lafrenz, with 1 o'clock services at the Blue Grass
church. Internment will be in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

Johannes Voss, 2346 West Second Street, a retired farmer, died at Mercy Hospital
in Davenport at 5:45 a.m., Friday, following a lingering illness.
Johannes Hinrich Voss was born June 14, 1865 in Puttgarden, Fehmarn, Germany to
Jochim and Catharina (Andresen) Voss and was educated there. He came to the
United States to Scott county, Iowa when he was 17 years old. He was married on
November 8, 1888 in Davenport to Laura Sohsen. The couple moved to a farm near
Durant and later farmed near Blue Grass, until retiring 10 years ago and moved
to Davenport. His wife died in 1928. He was a member of the Northwest
Davenport Turner Society.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Henry (Katie) Belter of Bennett, IA., Mrs.
Hugo (Minnie) Schnoor and Mrs. Walter (Theresa) Puck, both of Davenport, IA.;
two sons, William Voss of Durant, IA., and John Voss of Blue Grass, IA.; four
sisters, Mrs. Anna Westphal of Davenport, IA., Mrs. Dora Lafrenz of Montpelier,
IA., Mrs. Karl (Henriette) Erickson of Walcott, IA., and Mrs. Fritz (Bertha)
Lafrenz of Sherman, SD.; and 13 grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was
proceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
The body was removed to the Runge mortuary where the funeral will be held at
1:00 p.m., Monday. Burial will be in the Blue Grass Cemetery, Blue Grass.
