Mrs. Steffen Laid to Rest

Frazee Lady Was buried At Austin, Minn., Home of Her Sister Last Thursday.

Henry Steffen and his sister-in-law, Mrs. P.F.Thompson of Bloomfield, Nebr., arrived home Monday from their sad trip to Autin where they last week took Mrs. Steffen for burial.
As stated in last week's Press, Mrs. Steffen passed away at her home here at noon, Monday, June 8th, after an extended illness of two years. brief services, with Rev Homer I. Munson, officiating, were held at the Steffen home on Tuesday afternoon and that evening the body was shipped to Austin, where last Thursday afternoon, a final funeral service was held.  the services were conducted at the home of Mrs. Steffen's sister, Mrs. Wm. Hertle, with six of Mrs. Hertle's sons, namely William, Henry, Otto, Ewald, Carl and Alfred acting as pallbearers.  the minister in charge was Rev. Harry Poll of the Christian Church, who officiated in place of the Methodist minister Mrs. Steffen has requested, since all pastors of the latter faith in that area were away at "conference".  burial was made in Austin's beautiful Oakwood cemetery and two neighbor girls, Alberta Hanson and Viola Elward, had charge of the floral arrangements.
Margaretha Schumann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Schumann, was born in Fehmarn, Germany, January 14th 1877.  In 1895, when she was 18 years old, Margaretha came to America, making the trip all alone.  she joined her sister and brother, who were already living in Plattsmouth, Nebr., and made that settlement her home until 1900.  that fall she went to Bloomfield where her parents, youger brother and sister, had already emmigrated from Germany in the spring of 1900.  Henry Steffen met her there and they were married on the 28th of February, 1902.
Except for two years, 1908-9, spent in south Dakota, they lived on a farm at Bloomfield up to the fall of 1912.
In January 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Steffen moved to Frazee and Henry worked at odd jobs and the carpentry trade until 1917 when he entered the employ of W.A. Hoffman in his hardware store.
Mrs. Steffen had belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star for fully 15 years and aside from her social church and lodge activities, was a wonderful homemaker, neighbor and friend, beloved by all and truly one of the most respected ladies of our town.
She is deeply mourned and missed by everyone, yet knowing the intense and prolonged suffering which these later years it was her earthly lot to endure, we cannot wish her back to the prison of pain from which death at last mercifully freed her.  Her gentle ways and genial spirit will always remain in our memory and the patient uncomplaint with which she bore her heavy cross of physical affliction will ever be an example before us.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Steffen is survived by the following sisters and brother, Mrs. Wm. Hertle of Austin, Minn, Mrs. P.F. Thompson of Bloomfield, Neb., Mrs. C.E. Newman of Omaha, Neb., Theodore Schumann of Omaha and Jacob of Chariton, Iowa, also her aged father, Mr. M. Schumann.
Again we extend the sympathy of the entire community to Mr. Steffen in his bereavement.  He is taking Mrs. Thompson back to Bloomfield this coming Sunday and expects to visit down there for several weeks, retuning to Frazee some time after the Fourth.

Card of Thanks
I wish to express my sincere thanks for the many kindnesses extended to me during the illness of my beloved wife and at her burial.  I especially wish to thank Mrs. D.J. Graham and Mrs. H.M. Olson for the beautiful songs they sang at the funeral; rev. Homer I. Munson, and the many who sent floral tributes; also all the money other who in any way lent a helping hand in lightening my burden of sorrow.  I deeply appreciated your thoughtfulness.

Mrs. Margaretha Strohbeen, a prominent resident of Walcott, passed away yesterday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock at the home of her son, John H. Strohbeen of Walcott.  The deceased underwent an operation for appendicitis Wednesday evening and it is thought that old age prevented her from recovering.

Strohbeen, who preceded her in death 19 years ago.  The couple settled on a farm about one-fourth mile from Walcott and resided there until about 20 years ago when they retired and removed to Walcott.  Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Strohbeen had made her home with her son, John H. Strohbeen in Walcott.

Twelve children were born to the couple, four of whom passed away in infancy.  One daughter, Mrs. Charles Otto, passed away at the age of 27.  Mrs. Strohbeen is survived by the following children: August of Alvord, IA., Mrs. Hans (Catherine) Voss of Lakefield, MN., Mrs. John (Anna) Geurink of Durant, IA., Mrs. Charles (Bertha) Schlapkohl of Lakefield, MN., Mrs. Henry (Laura) Dietz of Walcott, IA., and Henry Strohbeen and John Strohbeen, both of Walcott, IA.

She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Catherine Harder of Walcott, IA., and two brothers, James Riessen of Davenport and Jurgen Riessen of Walcott, IA.  She was a kind and loving mother and her loveable disposition had won for her a host of friends.

February 27, 1883 she was married to John Suckstorf.  The young couple remained for a while in and near Denison, Iowa, but moved in 1885 to Pierce county, Nebraska settling on a farm until 1889, when they moved to Osmond.  In 1902 they came to Bloomfield to make this city their permanent home.

GRIM REAPER TAKES HENRY SUCKSTORF, 89

Another old settler of Crawford county answered his last summons when death called Mr. Henry Suckstorf last Thursday.  He was nearly 89 years old.

Henry Suckstorf was born in Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, March 20, 1838, the second son of Herman and Margaretta Suckstorf.  In 1861 he was united in marriage to Louisa Catherine Hofeldt and they came to this country in 1868 and settled in Davenport, where his parents and sisters had preceded him.  He was employed on a farm near Durant until 1878 when they removed to Crawford county and purchased a farm north of Schleswig, now occupied by Emil Maas.  After farming for twelve years they purchased the land where Schleswig now stands.  When the railroad came through they sold to the Townsite Company, retaining the small place on the edge of the town, where he has since made his home.

Two children were born to this worthy couple, Wilhelmina, now Mrs. Lorenz Petersen, born in Germany, and Dorothea, now Mrs. John Ehler, born after they came to the United States.  Mrs. Suckstorf preceded her husband to the Great Beyond on June 3, 1918.

When the town of Schleswig was plotted on his property the desire was to name the town Suckstorf, but he refused to accept this honor and as the naming was left to him he named it Schleswig, in honor of his birthplace.

He leaves his two daughters, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren.  Two brothers also survive, August of Schleswig and John of Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1:30 at the house in charge of Rev. W. G. Mauch and at 2:00 o'clock in Friedens Evangelical church conducted by Rev. W. R. Wetzeler of Appleton, Wis.  Burial in Morgan township cemetery.

Last Rites Held For John Suckstorf Saturday, Short Funeral Services Held at Home, Also at St. Mark's Church by Rev. H. O. Rhode
Interment Made At Osmond

After several months of sickness, from which there was apparently no recovery despite all the aid that could be administered, Mr. John Suckstorf, husband and father, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 1939, at his home at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 13 days.

John Suckstorf was born February 23, 1860 at Vadersdorf, on the Island of Fehmarn belonging to the province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.  The possibility of pursuing farming was limited and almost hopeless for anyone, unless the family had holdings.  New holdings could not be easily acquired, but there was willingness to work under the inducement and invitation by former friends to come to the United States, which offered to anyone willing to work almost unlimited possibilties.  His parents, a family of nine, decided to take this chance and emigrated to the United States in the year of 1866, when the departed was only six years old, when experience of home land and native country, were not fully developed.  However, he received yet in the old country, his first schooling, which was faithfully continued as soon as the family had settled in the New Country.

His parents came first to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa and here it might truthfully be said, was really his first home which had all his love and devotion of childhood days.  However, his stay was not long in these surroundings, pleasant though they were.  His spirit drove him further west and so in 1879 he came to Denison, Crawford County, Iowa, where he found another colony of his countrymen.  To this time date back many friendships which were faithfully kept to his last days, but too many to enumerate now.  Here in Denison he also found the mate and companion for his life and on February 27, 1883, he bestowed his love and trust in holy marriage upon Miss Dora Rix.

Soon after the marriage however, it was again new horizons that loomed before and new possibilities were inviting him and we see the young couple settling in Pierce County, Nebraska in the year 1885, taking up the humble nevertheless important pursuit of farming.  In 1889 he went into business and moved to Osmond, but in that same year transferred this enterprise to Bloomfield where he made his new home.  The opinion and comment upon this business is almost unanimous that it was forthright and honest, never taking advantage of anyone, but rather of goodwill and well-meant counsel, for which Mr. Suckstorf and his business associates earned the praise and esteem of their fellow citizens.

A number of years ago he withdrew from business activity and lived the following years in quietness and privacy.  And the end came after a long seige of sickness.

Mr. Suckstorf was a charter member of Hertha Lodge No. 5 of the order of the Hermann's Soehne in Osmond and transferred his membership to that of Freiheit No. 8 of the same order in Bloomfield, of which he was a faithful member to the last.  In 1918 be became a member of St. Mark's Lutheran church through confirmation performed by Rev. Spiekermann.  The amount for flowers, customarily given by the Ladies Aid of St. Mark's has been paid to Taidtha Home, Lincoln.

Surviving are his widow and three children, August, Harry and Mabel of Bloomfield, four having proceeded him in death and who were interred in the Osmond cemetery, where his remains were also taken for burial.
