Wilhelmina Margaretha Petersen
December 21, 1939
The Schleswig Leader (Schleswig, Iowa)
Funeral Services Will Be Held Today for Mrs. Lorenz Petersen
Funeral services for Mrs. Wilhelmina Petersen, who died Monday night, Dec. 18th
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Burk, will be held Thursday at the
Gottburg Funeral Home and at Friedens Evangelical church at 1:30. Rev. A.
F. Rinne will be in charge of the services.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Petersen was born Oct. 10, 1861 in Fehmarn, Germany. She
had reached the age of 78 years, 2 months and 12 days.
Mrs. Petersen had enjoyed fairly good health for years until this fall when her
health seemed to fail rapidly. However, she was still able to be up and
around until a week ago when it was discovered that she was suffering from a
liver ailment. During these last days all that was possible was done to
relieve her suffering. Her daughter cared for her with the help of a
trained nurse.
Mrs. Petersen was baptized in infancy in Germany. As a child she came with
her parents to America, settling at Durant, Iowa. In 1878 the family came
to Schleswig and the land which is now a part of Schleswig was their farm.
In 1880, she was united in marriage to Lorenz Petersen. This union was
blessed with six children; Henry, who preceded his mother in death, in Jan.
1930; John of Schleswig; Emma, Mrs. Chas. Burk, Schleswig; Ella, Mrs. Fred
Petersen of near Arthur; Amelia, Mrs. Alex Miller, Schleswig; Lillie, Mrs.
Herbert Bendixen, Cheyenne Wells, Colo.
Mr. and Mrs. Petersen lived on farms near Schleswig until 1921, when they
retired and moved to town to make their home. They were apart of the early
pioneers of this community and they were loved and respected by that generation
for their many acts of kindness and neighborliness.
Mr. and Mrs. Petersen were privileged to celebrate the golden wedding
anniversary in 1930. Mr. Petersen died in 1934.
Mrs. Petersen was loved by all those who knew her. Her home was always
open to visitors, and she enjoyed nothing more than to share lunch and a cup of
coffee with them. It is this spirit of friendliness of our early pioneers
that is missed so much in our day of constant rushing.
Mrs. Petersen lived alone for the past five years, until this fall when, due to
her failing eyesight, she went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Chas.
Burk.
She leaves to mourn her death, besides her children, nine grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Dora Ehler, of Schleswig. A close
and lasting friendship existed between these two sisters, and they shared many
of life's experiences together. There are also other relatives and
friends.
