Ferdinand C. Fick

Ferdinand C. Fick, son of Heinrich and Dora Flett Fick, was born on February 8, 1910 on the Isle of Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He passed away at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa on July 31, 1975.

He attended the school and learned the butchering trade in Germany. At the age of 18 he came to the United States in May 1928 and followed that career.

He married Dorothy Schiernbeck, August 15, 1934 at Battle Creek, Iowa. The couple started farming in the Ida Grove area. In 1950 they moved to their farm and lived there 22 years.

In October 1972 they moved to Ida Grove and retired because of ill health. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

It was a big thrill for him when his brother Heinz came from Germany to visit and was here one month. He left June 16, 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a son Eugene W. of Ida Grove, his daughter-in-law; two grandchildren, Laura Jean and Matthew William; three brothers, Hans of Battle Creek, Heinz and Walter of Germany and one sister, Elli Plambeck of Germany, several nieces and nephews.

His father, mother, brother, and one sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held August 2 at 2 o'clock at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alfred Pautsch officiating. Burial was in the Ida Grove cemetery with the Christensen Funeral Home in charge.

Erna Franzen

Mrs. John Franzen Died at Her Home Here Tuesday

Mrs. Erna Franzen, 39, died Tuesday, March 31 at her home in the northeast part of Manly.  She was brought home from a Mason City Hospital in February after being there two months and undergoing several major operations.  Since coming home, she has been confined to her bed.  Her daughter Dorothy, a senior in the Grafton high school, has been at home caring for her.  A son Alfred, who was employed in an airplane factory in California, reached home before his mother's death.

Erna Auguste Franzen was born November 23, 1902 in Fehmarn, Germany to Christian and Dorothy (Jappe) Paulsen and came to the United States to Grand Mound, Iowa in 1907 and later the family moved to Worth county.  She married John Franzen on November 23, 1920 in Grafton and together farmed near Grafton, until they moved to Manly in February.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Dorothy Franzen; two sons, Alfred Franzen and Eugene Franzen, who attends junior high school in Manly; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Paulsen of Kensett, IA.; two sisters, Mrs. Martin (Martha) Petersen and Mrs. Eldon (Frieda) Milke, both of Mason City, IA.; and four brothers, Christian Paulsen of Bolan, IA., Walter Paulsen of Washington state, and William and Arnold Paulsen, both of Mason City, IA.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 1:00 p.m., at the Bride Funeral home and at 2:00 p.m., at the Lutheran church in Grafton.  The Rev. H. Lechner, pastor of the church had charge of the service.  Burial was made in the Grafton Cemetery, Grafton, IA.

Adolph John Fries

Adolph John Fries was born in Fehmarn, Germany, December 5, 1877. He came to the United States in 1881 and with his parents settled on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa. It was there that he received his schooling.

March 8, 1899, he married Margaret Anna Iversen in Ida Grove. They lived on a farm in Crawford County until 1907 when they moved to their own farm near Ida Grove. In the fall of 1948 they retired to Ida Grove. In 1949 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and in 1959 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

He died suddenly of a heart attack November 24, 1961, at the nursing home in Schaller, Iowa where he had been a patient since November 1959.

Survivors include his widow, Margaret Anna; three sons, John of Kiron, William and Adolph both of Ida Grove; three daughters, Mrs. Arvid (Agnes) Gustafson of Kiron, Mrs. James (Margaret) Oxendale and Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Eng, both of Arthur; 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; two half brothers, Ernest Ohl of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Nick Ohl of Charter Oak, Iowa; and one half sister, Mrs. Toby McCoid of Dow City, Iowa.

One daughter preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 27 at the Winebrenner Church of God. Rev. C.H. Lacquement officiated and burial was in the Ida Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roland Oxendale, John Oxendale, Harlan Fries, Dale Fries, Delmar Eng, and Robert Meeves.

Hans Hinrich Froendt
June 23, 1960
The Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, Iowa

  Funeral Services were held Wednesday for Hans Froendt, Sr. 92, who died at his home in Spirit Lake Sunday night.  The Rev. B. J. Swede officiated at the rites held in Harpoles Funeral Home.  Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.
  Mr. Froendt was born in Germany and farmed for many years in Dickinson County. He had resided in Spirit Lake the past 18 years after retirement from the farm.
  Survivors include three sons, George of Arnolds Park, Hans Jr., of Spirit Lake and William of Milford and four daughters, Mrs. William (Ida) Guritz of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Tracy (Mary) Estes, Mrs. Walter (Agnes) McCullough, and Mrs. Carl (Elsie) Grant of Des Moines.

Note: Hans Hinrich Froendt was born July 11, 1867 at Petersdorf, Fehmarn.
