Theodor Heinrich Bockwoldt
May 18, 1920
The Davenport Democrat and Leader (Davenport, Iowa)
CARPENTER IS "DEATH CURVE" TRAIN VICTIM
Theodore Bockwoldt Dies of Injuries at Mercy Hospital
The broken and unconscious form of Theodore Bockwoldt, 35 years old, was found
lying on the Rock Island right of way near West Second Street and Division
Street about 9:25 o'clock last night. Bockwoldt died at 1 o'clock this morning
at Mercy Hospital from his injuries.
Police and county authorities have been unable to ascertain what train or engine
it was which struck the man and caused his death, and the witness who found him,
E. Rickerson of Muscatine had left town this morning.
The right side of Bockwoldt's body was crushed by the impact, his arm was
shattered and his ribs broken. A piece of his trousers had been ripped from the
rest of the garment and was found several yards from where the injured man lay,
when first discovered.
The case was turned over to Coroner Clarence Ebert and he is now investigating.
An inquiry into the man's death will probably be held Thursday evening, it was
announced. Meanwhile efforts are being made to find the crew of the Kansas City
train, which passes through Davenport about 9:05 o'clock in the evening.
It is believed that this train was the one which caused Bockwoldt's injuries and
subsequent death. Police and other officials are also attempting to find out
where Bockwoldt spent the early part of the evening. As he was a carpenter, it
is thought that he might have attended the session of the striking carpenters.
This has not been verified.
Bockwoldt was found by E. Rickerson about 9:25 o'clock, as the latter was
walking west along the railroad right of way. Rickerson's attention was
attracted by groans coming from the side of the track. Investigating behind
Frank's Foundry, he discovered the shattered Bockwoldt.
The ambulance was rushed to the place of accident and the fatally hurt man
speeded to Mercy Hospital, where he was attended by Dr. Middleton. So serious
were his internal injuries however, that death resulted about four hours after
his discovery.
Theodor Heinrich Bockwoldt was born November 17, 1884 in Strukkamp, Fehmarn,
Germany to Peter and Anna (Jahn) Bockwoldt and came to this country in May of
1896. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dora Thiel; three brothers, Hans, John
and Julius; and one sister, Mrs. Robert (Dora) Bowser, all of Davenport. He was
preceded in death by his father, a step-father and one sister.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the home of his mother, 518 Oak
Street, at 3 o'clock. Johannes Kroeger was in charge of the services and burial
was made at Fairmount Cemetery. Six members of Carpenter's Union No. 4 served
as pallbearers. They were: E. Peters, H. Westphal, George H. Martin, R.
